History of the First Atomic Bomb - swissguy
This DVD consists of two documentaries about the development and deployment of the first two atomic bombs. The first of the two documentaries was the longest and was informative but the narration sounded forced (overly dramatic) to the point of being "corny" at times. The 2nd documentary was narrated more evenly and sounded more professional. Both were historically informative, explained the political and diplomatic situation during the 2nd world war and explained the creation and use of the atomic bomb very well. I recommend watching this DVD as a reminder of the horrific devastation caused by the atomic bomb. It is easy to forget when other threats seem so imminent i.e. global warming however the bomb still looms over us all and always will.Important film for those interested in history - flynch
The main movie (not the extras) is an informative description of the events that took place around the development of the bomb and the logistics for loading the bombs on the plane, interviews with the flight crew and results of the bombing. It is all interesting material.
One brief comment made during the analysis of the Nagasaki bomb caught my attention. The Nagasaki bomb was dropped a few miles off the "aim point" and therefore caused less damage than was planned. The off target bomb damaged mostly industrial areas and therefore killed less people than planned. The planned aiming point was designed to cause civilian damage! (Silly me, I thought targeting civilians was a war crime.)
The "extras" on the DVD, titled "The decision to drop the bomb" is much more interesting that the main movie. It provides evidence to show that the war was prolonged so that the bomb could be used. The conventional thinking is that the bomb hastened the end of the war - the truth may be the exact opposite of what most of us have been taught.
If you are interested in history, this is a must see film.
