A definitive movie. A landmark effort, monumental in its delivery. Now, it is Shakespeare, other reviews put it down for being so. It is long. It is unapologetic in its desire to reveal the entire play. That being said, easier to follow than many other versions. I watched it twice in a weekend, it had that much of an effect.
Branagh did place the production in the 19th century, although when this is done it typically falls short of the mark, here it works remarkably well.wake me up when.... - deetmouse
I'm sorry but how can I write a review on a movie I honestly couldn't stay awake long enough to watch? What little I did catch was unintelligible due to the fact it was just like that damn book we all read in high school and we couldn't understand what the hell was being said. I guess I still don't do Elizabethan... go figure. For crying out loud when is this coming out on DVD - XTRUClerk
A Shakespeare class was part of my curriculum when I went to college and I really enjoyed the plays we read. I was surprised and a little disappointed that we didn't even touch on Hamlet though. It is probably (except for Romeo and Juliet) the play with all the most famous lines: Yoric, I knew him Horacio... Get thee to a nunery... To be or not be... and my personal favorite: Oh that this too, too solid flesh would melt! I wanted to look into it after that class so I picked up a paperback copy, read it, and immediately loved it. I love the movie for many reasons, including Kenneth Brannaugh performance. He does go a little overboard, playing Hamlet as both mad and sane -- usually it's one or the other -- depressed -- horribly so -- and even jovial and mocking at times. The plus is that this movie tackles the entire play. It isn't truncated in any way, every word of text is here. Five acts if memory serve, in this case two halves with an intermission. Over four hours long! it is also a very beautiful movie to look at, with stunning sets and great costumes. Also a stellar cast and great music. Where, though, is the DVD? It is long overdue and I want to see a collector's edition -- not likely as this is already a long film, but one can hope. If you see the VHS version, rent that, it will be well worth your time. And if you know someone in the DVD business, give them a tap or something would you? Cheers.
