Stella Dallas
True heroines don't always save lives. Sometimes they're simply mothers, with an everlasting devotion to their children. Such is the case in Stella Dallas. Starring Barbara Stanwyck in an Academy Award nominated performance that's as courageous as it is fine" (The New York Times), this enduring classic is a "vivid and authentic cross-section of American life (full of) deeply moving emotional power" (The Hollywood Reporter)!
Even after her marriage to well-bred Stephen Dallas (John Boles) ends, irrepressible Stella (Stanwyck) is determined to give their daughter (Anne Shirley) the life she never had. And when it comes down to her child's happiness versus her own, Stella's sacrifice is truly the epitome of bravery.

Stanwyck is great, the movie not so much - rnhaas
This is a truly great performance by Stanwyck (I would expect no less). As usual, she manages to infuriate me. But this movie...I don't really know what to say about a movie that idolizes a woman like this. All so her daughter can marry rich. Wonderful morals these old movies have. I'm glad the world has changed and we don't have to suffer through things like this any more.Amazing acting, sad story. - owen8
Stanwick was up of an Oscar with this role and there is no question about it. A mother, even one as messed up as Stella, finds a way to love her daughter in the most unselfish way. This is a melodrama so be prepared for that. Good scrip with some dated acting. But not from Ms Stanwick. For thos of us who love old movies... - kevinm
This is one of the best Barbara Stanwyck films out there. I'm not a big fan of the lady but hat's off to this performance. It's the story of a selfless mother who will do anything for her child. It was made in the 1930's and has all the great elements of this era. If you like old movies, go for this one !
