The Americanization Of Emily
During the build-up to D-Day in 1944, the British found their island hosting many thousands of American soldiers who were "oversexed, overpaid, and over here". That's Charlie Madison exactly; he knows all the angles to make life as smooth and risk-free as possible for himself. But things become complicated when he falls for an English woman, and his commanding officer's nervous breakdown leads to Charlie being sent on a senseless and dangerous mission.

The Conflicts of War - Goodard
An underrated American classic, this film should be applauded for taking such an anti-war point of view. Yet it is a Hollywood production, and therefore must in the end convince you of the goodness of war. However, the conflicting notions play out in such ironic ways that you can't help but be delighted by the ambiguity.Fascinating, but hard to categorize - DWM54
The Americanization of Emily is part biting satire, part romantic drama, but not particularly a comedy. Based on a screenplay by Chayefsky, the film opines that while war may be necessary, it shouldn't be glorified. Shot in 1964, director Arthur Hiller successfully fought to film the show in black and white. The movie comes across as a successful combination of Catch-22 and The Sound of Music, with a young Julie Andrews finding value in a flawed James Garner.Definately not your average romantic comedy! - jen_at_temagami
A very different role for Julie Andrews - but so good! She is absolutely brittiant as a young widow & James Garner is at his best as a scheming Naval Officer.
The ending is particularly interesting, different, but really the only way to go for the good of all.
