Brothers (Brodre)
Michael (Ulrich Thomsen) has everything under control: a successful military career, a beautiful wife (Connie Nielsen) and two daughters. His younger brother Jannik (Nikolaj Lie Kaas) is a drifter, living on the edge of the law. When Michael is sent to Afghanistan on a UN mission the balance between the two brothers changes forever. Michael is missing in action - presumed dead - and Sarah is comforted by Jannik, who against all odds shows himself capable of taking responsibility for both himself and the family. War is hell for everyone - Steady
This is the second Susanne Bier film I’ve watched (After the Wedding being the first) and they both have been excellent. She goes for the twist in the plot and totally unexpected endings.
In Brothers we are exposed to the horrors of war and the consequences for war’s actions. Individuals and families can be destroyed by circumstances and decisions.
What happens in war is compared to what happens in civilian life for bad choices. And we are left questioning what we would do if exposed to the same choices.
For me , I’m going to watch everything to which Bier has put her hand. What war does to people.. - Moosette
This movie is like the later american "Valley of Eliah" exploring what war does to people. The main characther is a guy with very high moral standards. He is highly respected and has a loving wife. His brother has been in jil for bank robbery.
To me this movie proves that even the best man can get (or will get) pushed out of his limits in war. In war things happen that destroys everything you believed in, and he might come home alive, but what he used to be , his "humanity", is gone so to say...thought-provoking - memory39
This is a moving, quintessentially Danish, and at times quite frightening film about how a traumatic war-related event dramatically changes the lives of two brothers and their family members. One may question the plausibility of the behavior of the two brothers--is the responsible, good brother really likely to commit the terrible deed that he does? is the petty-criminal, bad brother likely to turn his life around as he does?—but there is no denying that this is a thoughtful and thought-provoking film about how unpredictable events, which in the space of an eye blink, can profoundly alter our lives.
