Amarkanth Varma is employed with All India Radio as a reporter who is dispatched to cover festivities in the northeastern part of India. He meets a woman named Meghna at the train station, and through several chance meetings and train rides with the woman, becomes infatuated and confused by her on-again-off-again reaction to him. Finally, heartbroken by her apparent refusal and her revelation that she is married, then confused and bruised by a beating administered by her family (during which he finds out she is not married), he agrees to forget Meghna and marry the woman his family has chosen for him. Meghna is not done with him, however, and shows up at his house at the time of his wedding, with her own revolutionary agenda.
