Extremely boring - Silverthorn
I saw this film on VHS a few years ago and thought it was extremely boring. I couldn't get into the characters, story, at all. It is another film that has a cult following though. I wouldn't recommend this film. However, if you would like to see why people like the film so much, please be sure to check it out.Read the book first - ross3
Normally, I'd never suggest that you read the book on which a movie is based before seeing the movie. The reason: the books are almost always way better. However, in this case you need to have the full story -- which they couldn't possible cram into a single movie without it being 12 hours long. Considering this movie was made in the mid '80s, the special effects, actiing, etc. are on par for this era. However, given the limitations of technology, the constraints imposed by such a formidable story (both length and complexity) and, as I understand it, the backstage politics around editing, this movie stands up fairly well to Frank Herbert's book. Dune is one of the greatest Sci Fi stories ever, the movie, not so much, but for fans and collectors this is a must see.
I'd suggest that you not rent from Roger's Video Direct (zip.ca)- try your local store -- I had two discs sents to me and both were scratched badly around the 50% mark. I finally gave up and just let my DVD player skip over the damaged section, but it was very annoying (and yes, I tried in 2 other players and my PC and they all skipped in the same place on all machines even after repeated cleanings) Because this disc is double-sided, I suspect it is more suceptible to damage from careless handling and being jostled around by Canada Post. Non-Herbert fans and people who don't like sci-fi won't get anything out of this movie. So if your spouse, sig-other doesn't like sci-fi, watch by yourself.
It would be really cool if Peter Jackson ever decided to do a remake of this movie - there is a director who can adapt a long complex story to the silver screen without too much collateral damage.
3 out of 5 stars because the movie could have been better, but nevertheless is a good attempt at capturing one of the best classic sci-fi novels of all time. If you haven't read the book, but saw the movie - go get the book today. You'll be glad you did.george carlin as narrator!!?? - armchaircritic
After viewing this movie from Zip I went out bought a copy. Yes, this movie is THAT GOOD. BUT there are problems with it. I will not get into the whole cheesy FX (after all this is a 20+ year old movie) but as another reviewing mentioned briefly the extended version starts with aprx 10 minute "power point" like slide show!! As much as like george carlin, he does leave a lot to be desired as a narrator.
Taking away this slide show the extended version is an OK movie but I really miss the original actress's voice over...it just "fits" better with the overall theme of the movie.
If the extended version had kept the original voice over...and cut the PP slide-show it would have been a GREAT movie.
For first time viewers I recommend watching the theatrical cut THEN, and only if you liked it, watch the extended edition. Otherwise the extra footage will just overwhelm you with names and facts.
Is this a movie for "everyone"...NO it is not in the same league as say Casablanca BUT it is still a good "Sci-Fi waste three hours with mind numbing entertainment" kind of movie. If you haven't seen I highly recomend you give it a try.
