Ali: The Director's Cut
Superstar Will Smith (Men In Black) gave the performance of his career and received his first Oscar nomination as boxing legend Muhammad Ali in an amazing epic drama from Oscar nominated director Michael Mann (Best Director, The Insider, 1999).

Epic movie about a great man - Poet
Muhammad Ali was never scared to face the consequences for what he believed in. He stood tall and never backed down. He's an example of courage for his whole generation and the people who came after them.
By taking on this role, Will Smith also showed a lot of guts. It could have gone terribly wrong, but, fortunately, it didn't. He pulled it off in awesome fashion and showed that he truly can be a great actor.
This film is a glimpse into one decade of Ali's life. It bothered me the first time I watched it. The second time around, I understood that it was the whole purpose of the movie. It was the decade that defined Ali for the rest of his life.
The supporting cast was also very good, especially Jon Voight, who didn't look like himself at all in this role.
Great movie by a great director. Well worth a watch!Ali - TwoBoggySwampers
The beginning of the story is fairly scattered, making it difficult to get the feel of what's going on. I think that unless you know a lot about Ali's personal life, views, beliefs, and the time period in which he became such a famous boxer, the opening doesn't make much sense. You can, however, get the gist of it and learn of his reasons behind changing his name, his Army induction rebellion, his near imprisonment, and the death of his dear friend Malcolm X. After you get past all of that, the movie picks up and you get to see the Ali that you know and remember - fighting in the ring and mouthing off on the T.V. news and sports shows (mainly with good old Howard). The boxing matches wind their way through fights with all the other greats of that time and end up with Ali against Foreman in Africa, fighting for the heavy-weight championship belt. By the end of it all, the movie is a worthy watch. Will Smith did a great job of taking on the persona of Ali. The supporting actors were great as well. If you like Ali, check it out.Ali (The Director's Cut) - Sam-
i'd held off on watching this ever it blew up as Oscar bait back in 2001. but then this extended Director's Cut came out. and i'm a huge fan of Michael Mann's long, silent, almost existential, shots. and they were what saved this movie for me. or at least made it human. Will Smith does a good job here but i just never felt like we were taken inside Ali. it felt more like a biography checklist, a really good one, than a human story. i didn't feel there was enough heart when i compared it to the immense talent of the participants involved. good but not great once it was over.
