Emperor of the North
In this gritty and violent period drama set in the depths of the Great Depression, Lee Marvin stars as A #1, the acknowledged King of the Hoboes. A #1 is famous among his fellow tramps for his ability to catch a ride on any train, no matter how risky the hop or dangerous the guards. He acts as a sort of mentor for Cigaret (Keith Carradine), a young hobo who brags that some day he'll surpass A #1 in his accomplishments. But neither has had the courage to ride a train guarded by Shack (Ernest Borgnine), an unusually sadistic railroad cop who will brutally beat or even murder any man who tries to catch a ride on his train. A #1 is determined that no one, not even Cigaret, is going to deny him his title, so taking his life in his hands, he and Cigaret hop a ride on Shack's train, and they are soon bearing the full brunt of his violent nature.

I was scrolling through some lists and spotted Lee Marvin's name, thus discovering this absolute
gem of a movie. This is another winner from Mr.Marvin and Ernest Borgnine; I agree with the other review here-it's among their best work ever. No surprise this comes from top notch director, Robert Aldrich They don't make em...EPIC. - altpov
I saw this with a farsi over-dub on a Betamax top-loader!! I didn't really understand what was going on or why, and yet I watched it over and over agin.
This isn't your standard hollywood movie or period piece. The dialogue isn't slick or stylized; notcontrived. It's rugged and raw and has coarse look intended to capture the feel of the story. The violence isn't stylized and the gore is graphically real. This was the first I ever saw of Lee Marvin and Ernest Borgnine, and to this day insist it's their best work.
