I loved this...very good Japanes horror - Fudgeflaps
I found this original Japanese version to be better than the American remake. The people behind the American one could use a lesson in subtlety.
The atmosphere was very dark and the whole feel of the movie seemed sinister and mysterious, as if there was some real, but subtle evil present.
I recommend this to everyone. Should be okay for everyone except very young children.Better than the US remake - PhoenixBC
Ok, so it didn't have the big budget, but I thought the original was a much better movie. The American version is a pale copy. The horror is very subtle but there's this undercurrent of malevolence and evil that builds right to the end. There's a scene in this movie where all you see are a pair of children's rain boots walking slowly down a wet corridor. Doesn't sound scary but it made my skin crawl. A must see for Japanese horror fans.Interesting, Flawed, Typical Ghost Story - Nik-
On the surface, it's a fairly mundane ghost story. Beneath the surface, it's more complicated and interesting than just that. Water, the unconscious, female sexuality and power -- there's a lot of interesting stuff going on in here.
Parts of the ending struck me as predictable. It can be painful to watch a character piece together something you figured out a long time ago. However, I'm willing to overlook that when the movie itself is so complex and, well, wet.
There are a few CGI moments that are just goofy, but fortunately not too many.
There's an American version of the film coming out, starring Jennifer Connely. It will be interesting to see how badly the yanks screw up this quiet, subdued, stylish, and creepy film.
