The Front Page
Reporter Hildy Johnson (Jack Lemmon) is at the top of his game in the world of 1930's Chicago journalism, but he's sick of it and he wants out. His editor, Walter Burns (Walter Matthau) has other ideas, however - he wants Hildy to cover the execution of an insane murderer.

Excellent version of Ben Hecht play - Old_Video_Man
This is a fantastic version of an oft-filmed play. The first movie from the play, "The Front Page" was made in 1931, starring Adolphe Menjou, Pat O'Brien, and Edward Everett Horton. Then, in 1940, based on the same play, Howard Hawks directed Cary Grant, Rosalind Russell, and Ralph Bellamy in "His Girl Friday". This third version provides the wonderful chemistry between Walter Matthau and Jack Lemon, and outstanding direction by Billy Wilder. Also giving great performances are Susan Sarandon, Vincent Gardenia, David Wayne, and Charles Durning - WHAT A CAST. Even if you've seen the plot line before, you know that getting there is more than half the fun. If you like the DVD, you should also see the earlier versions. There is also another later adaptation, "Switching Channels" which stars Burt Reynolds, Kathleen Turner, Christopher Reeve, Ned Beatty, and Henry Gibson. This 1988 film is not available on DVD - if it were it would be right up there with The Front Page on top of my ZipList.
