My Brilliant Career
This is the film that became a worldwide sensation and remains perhaps the most beloved and acclaimed romantic epic of all time! Oscar®-nominee Judy Davis (Passage to India, Husbands and Wives) made her international breakthrough debut as Sybylla Melvyn, a free-spirited young writer who refuses to conform to society’s expectations of how a 'proper woman' should live her life. Sam Neill (Jurassic Park, The Piano) co-stars as the wealthy suitor who tries to win her restless heart in this Oscar® nominated classic directed by Gillian Armstrong (Little Women, Starstruck). Long unavailable in America, My Brilliant Career has been fully restored and remastered in High Definition from the original negative, under the supervision of Academy Award® nominated Director of Photography Donald McAlpine.

A small intimate drama of one self-centred young woman's journey towards wisdom that plays like a grand epic....beautifully shot with first class performances all around. Armstrong displays a tremendous talent for creating a time and place, suffusing austere images of the Australian outback with golden light and muted colour reminiscent of old daguerrotype photos. She expertly weaves elements of nature into the story's narrative; parched fields, dust storms and sudden cloudbursts, along with a sense of longing and muted eroticism that makes the movies final scenes all the more compelling. My Brilliant Career - nxnw66
I agree with the other reviewer that MBC does have that AoGG feel but with an Aussie slant. I wanted the main character to marry and be traditional as any other choice would be difficult for a woman living in that time however, not to spoil it for others, she makes a decision that makes the moview truely brilliant. Judy Davis, in one of her first roles, shines as the main character and it is always a treat watching her.The Australian Anne of Green Gables - Frederictonian
This story reminded me of the adventures of PEI's fabled Anne Shirley: the central character is a poor, young woman deemed to be ugly; she doesn't fit in because she is ambitious for more than marriage and wants to be a writer; she falls in love with a good man who likes her unconventional ways. But in its Australian incarnation, the couple is sexier and the woman, wilder and more rebellious. I can see why the movie made a splash when it came out.
