The Big Bounce
She's beautiful. She's Carefree. She's trouble.
"Did you ever kill anybody?" she asks when she learns he did a hitch in Vietnam. "Was it fun?"
He is hot-headed drifter Jack Ryan. She is a thrill-seeking party girl Nancy Barker. Together, they're like gasoline and a match in this volatile tale based on a novel by Elmore Leonard (Get Shorty) and brought to the screen again in 2003 with Owen Wilson, Sara Foster and Morgan Freeman. Here, Ryan O'Neil makes his feature-film debut as Jack, a hard-luck GI smitten with Nancy (Leigh Taylor-Young)... and never stopping to think where her seductive spree of petty-crime kicks might end. The thrills she calls "bounces' may lead to a notoriously big bounce. For Jack that may mean a very big fall.

Messy narrative, okay cast - Superdave
Elmore Leonard is famous for the complex tangle of seemingly random, out-of-control events in which his lowlife characters find themselves caught up. This early attempt to put Leonard's world on screen comes off as simply murky and lacking in narrative focus. Ryan O'Neal makes a good Leonard lead - amoral, unconcerned with consequences and sometimes none too bright - and the supporting cast is fine too. But the resulting movie lacks the atmosphere of the book, not to mention any sense of real purpose.
