Winter Solstice
The only way to find the future is to face the past.
Landscape gardener Jim Winters (Anthony LaPaglia) is a quiet craftsman--a soft-spoken man who prefers an orderly life. His family, however, is anything but orderly. Older son Gabe (Aaron Stanford) is planning his escape to Florida, leaving behind any shot at a stable future with his girlfriend. Younger son Pete (Mark Webber) has retreated into a private world of anger, drift and disappointment. Jim struggles watching his sons make choices he views as disastrous compromises. It is only when he meets his new neighbor, Molly (Allison Janney), that Jim finds a way to deal with his own life and his family's future.

I decided to rent this based on a preview attached to another DVD. The cast looked very strong, the snippets shown in the preview promised a decent story of a single Dad finding a way to live again and deal with his difficulties vis-a-vis his kids.
Turns out the only good 30 seconds or so of the actual movie were covered in the preview.
So do yourself a favour and just pass on this one.I agree with Kimi - volt
I love Anthony LaPaglia. He can play either comedy or drama and make you believe. That is why I gave this film an hour of my time. But after an hour of nothing happening--no conflict, no resolution, no story arc--I had to give up. I figured nothing more would happen so why bother. Great acting throughout. But no story to speak of.Surprisingly Refreshing - Cruel_Intentions
My thoughts ... Placid on the surface but it had this continual bubbling beneath that serves to create this underlying tension and anxiousness which make you wonder ... Where is this story going? thin on plot, yet masterly made .. The director was able to extract superlative performances from EVERY cast member which made this film work. This film is subtle and many aspects will be lost on most.
It is a fantastically crafted piece and is in essence, a beautiful film. Well done anthony la paglia for doing this low budget film and for giving such a fantastic emotional and well balanced performance that rubbed off onto all.
