The Interpreter
The truth needs no translation.
African-born U.N. interpreter Silvia Broome (Nicole Kidman) inadvertently overhears a death threat against an African head of state scheduled to address the United Nation's General Assembly. Realizing she's become a target of the assassins as well, Silvia's desperate to thwart the plot... if only she can survive long enough to get someone to believe her. Sean Penn is Tobin Keller, the federal agent charged with protecting the interpreter, who nonetheless suspects she may not be telling the whole truth. Silvia and Tobin, by nature, see life from different points of view: one, a U.N. interpreter, believes in the power and sanctity of words; the other, a Secret Service agent, believes in reading people based on their behavior, no matter what is said.
In the right hallway, at the right time, all it takes is a whisper to tip the balance of power.

How do you translate AWFUL - FrannieP
THis movie was just a waste of time. THe plot was unbelievable, strained. THE acting was terrible. I usually like Sean Penn but I couldn't even find anything remotely redeeming about his performance. THe fact that they had to invent a country where the action takes place is ludicrous. Le grand Sydney Pollack est de retour avec son nouveau film que l'on attendait depuis 1999 où il avait présenté Random Hearts qui n'était pas très réussi. L'homme aux multiples Oscars et nominations a réalisé d'extraordinaires films, pensons à Out of Africa, Tootsie, Three Days of the Condor et autres classiques.
Une interprète à l'O.N.U. est témoin d'un complot visant à assassiner le président du Matobo, dictateur sanguinaire, lors de sa visite en Amérique pour justifier le génocide. Interrogée par les services secrets, elle devient le principal suspect de cette conspiration, elle qui a milité activement contre Edmond Zuwanie lors de sa jeunesse en Afrique.
Basé sur l'histoire de Martin Stellman et Brian Ward, on fait face à un scénario franchement intéressant et étoffé. On reconnaît la signature de Pollack dès les premières minutes du film en Afrique et rapidement, nous sommes lancés dans une intrigue palpitante et saisissante.
Évidemment, les acteurs académisés que sont Nicole Kidman et Sean Penn crèvent l'écran et leurs qualités sont indéniables. Kidman, dans le rôle de Sylvia Broome, offre une performance colossale dans cette femme dure et sensible à la fois. Nous l'avions déjà vu dans d'autres rôles marquants, mais il est toujours rafraîchissant de voir sa capacité à choisir de bons films. Sean Penn, même s'il ne propose pas le rôle de sa carrière, est égal à lui-même en agent dont la femme volage a été tuée.
On embarque rapidement dans l'histoire qui se veut un polar captivant, la grosse faiblesse est au niveau de l'intensité. Après une puissante première heure et demie, la tension, qui se doit d'augmenter sans cesse, prend tout à coup une descente et rapidement l'intérêt diminue. On se doute de la situation finale qui est cependant réussie par l'ajout d'éléments surprenants. Pollack, premier à filmer au Q.G. de l'O.N.U. a le don de présenter des scénarios bien menés ce qui est ici le cas, mais les attentes étaient peut-être trop éAverage - Malakaiii
This had all the makings of a really good movie, but they didn't really use what they had. A great cast, who can certainly act; an interesting premise; scenes in Africa; the UN Building... It's all good stuff, yet the movie comes off as mediocre.
Seemed to have a problem with pacing and suspense. Even in some of the more intense scenes, I found my mind drifting. It really didn't grab the viewer as it could have. The characters come off as flat, and I didn't really connect with them, which I blame on the writing and not the actors. Such weird lines as "I'll be honest with you, I don't know if I can be honest with you" only tear you away from the movie-watching experience.
I'd say check it out if you like the stars, but don't expect a real suspenseful drama!
