Last Stand At Saber River
Tom Selleck rides into Western adventure in grand, gritty style as Paul Cable in Last Stand at Saber River, from the novel by Elmore Leonard.

Excellent Western - newdaysof
Tom Selleck plays a confederate soldier of the American civil war who returns home to his family in Texas after being away for many years. He takes his wife and two children to Arizona to reclaim their home and ranch, but find that three men allied with the Union army have taken over their ranch. They reclaim the ranch after killing two of the men but in the coming weeks, a bitter war develops between the two opposing factions. In a sense, the civil war carries on at a very personal level far away from the main armies.
The scripting and plot are excellent, all actors give fine performances including Selleck and the Carradine brothers Keith and David. The scenery and cinematography are beautiful. Although there is are a fair amount of gun battles, the violence is not gratutious and the movie focuses primarily on the struggles of the individuals involved. Overall, an excellent "modern" Western. To Live In Peace - Is That Such A crime? - bwod
Tom Selleck seems to have taken over from Clint Eastwood in portraying the strong, mostly silent cowboy. In this 1997 t.v. movie, he plays a wounded Confederate soldier who just wants to be reunited with his family and return to his homestead in Arizona.
But things are never that easy, as a run-in with the Carridine brothers shows. It was a pleasure to see both David and Keith reunited on-screen. They play it sleazy, just like you'd expect from the bad guys. Then there's an unexpected turn near the end which allows for redemption. At least for one of them.
Filmed in various locations throughout the state of New Mexico, "Last Stand At Saber River" has an air of authenticity and delivers some exciting action scenes. For fans of the western, this makes for a good pick. Mount up!Another Tom Selleck Western - JKW-
Last Stand At Saber River is an entertaining movie if you are a Tom Selleck fan. There is nothing surprising about this movie but it is true to Tom Selleck form. He is a cowboy, he gets angry and he fights for what he feels is right. If you like Quigly Down Under, Monte Walsh or Crossfire Trail then check this one out, you won't be disappointed. I don't expect this made for TV will ever win any awards.
