I'm Dancing As Fast As I Can
One of today's most gifted and brilliant actresses, Jill Clayburgh, brings her special sensitivity to the role of Barbara Gordon, a successful television documentary producer who became hopelessly dependent on tranquilizers. But this is much more than a story of addiction and withdrawal; it is an examination of the success syndrome that affects the lives of people whose career triumphs are achieved at great personal sacrifice. It is the dramatic and suspenseful story of one woman's survival in a battle for her sanity -and her life. In this urgent quest, she must discover her inner strength, independence, and ability to be truly happy.

I am glad I read a review before renting this movie. I am happy to know that someone else has the same viewpoint that I have - do not go to see a movie if you have read the book. You will probably be extremely disappointed. Yes it is hard to transform a book into a movie without losing the essense of the story. Some have actually done it but very view.I'm Dancing as Fast as I Can - Utro43
If you have read the book - which was excellent - don't bother with this movie. It was a huge disappointment.
The characters were not developed, and the whole issue mental illness glossed over.
This movie does not deal with the reasons Barbara needed Valium in the first place. The character Jean, who was the subject of a documentary Barbara did, and who in the book actually died which triggered her breakdown, is the most ridiculous character, totally unbelievable.
The daily hospital life, and dynamics between patients are not shown. To sum up, everything that made the book so interesting was left out of this movie. A waste of time!
