Enjoyable trashy TV en francais - QueerNorth63
If you like your melodrama with a French twist, then this is 'a ton gout'. Denueve plays the day-time soap opera grande dame to the hilt and seems to have quite a lot of fun not taking her character (or herself) too seriously. If you thought Katherine Chancellor on Y&R was a hoot, then you'll love this.
Kinski & Sobieski find their groove in the GH/Y&R/DOUL/etc. style required, emoting to the max in their roles. They get away with all the long sighs and furtive glances required of them and if you take it as good fun, you'll enjoy it. This is not Truffaut or Renoir or Godard, so you need to recalibrate your taste for French film. This was actually done for French TV I believe, and it's like a marathon-melodrama-mini-series. Dynasty fans, you'll love it. French new wave fans, not so much but you will find it amusing. The funniest thing of all was poor Rupert Everett scowling with furrowed brow so much, all I could think of was how much he looked like the American Eagle muppet.
