Dad
With an extraordinary performance from Academy Award® winner Jack Lemmon, this critically acclaimed drama is the heartwarming story between father and son. When workaholic John Tremont's (Ted Danson) mother (Olympia Dukakis) is unexpectedly hospitalized, he returns home to care for his aging father (Lemmon). As John teaches his father to regain his independence, the two of them form a friendship and John realizes what's missing from his own life. Dad reminds us all of the importance of family in this moving story co-starring Kathy Baker, Kevin Spacey and Ethan Hawke.

...and then call your dad.
I won't lie, this is an unabashed tearjerker/heartstring puller - but it doesn't wallow in the melodrama of a Hallmark Special, or play out like a made-for-TV movie.
Based on a novel, the script isn't as simple as it appears, and this explores many dynamics of the father/son relasionship, the trials of growing older, the burden of taking care of your aging parents, and the desensitized way the health care system can treat the elderly.
The acting is excellent throughout, with Jack Lemmn giving an Oscar worthy performance as the patriarch of the family (he was nominated for a Golden Globe). Ted Danson is surprisingly good, and Olympia Dukakis is spot on as the overbearing mother.
Look for Kevin Spacey in a small, but scene stealing role.
This movie will take you through an emotional roller coaster, but it's a journey you'll be glad to take with these characters. A sincere, sad, but beautiful movie.Tearjerker. - D2--
This is an incredibly underrated comedy slash drama, definitely NOT my usual can of worms. I guess a strong cast, some heartfelt performances and a decent story can equate to a good film.
~~ WARNING: minor spoiler ahead ~~
The story settles on a son reuniting with his estranged father after his mother passes away. There's a good balance of drama, comedy and some sad parts. Without spoiling too much, you can guess what the sad part is, but the great thing is that the story is complete enough that it doesn't leave you depressed.
Video and audio quality are adequate.
3.5 stars.
