Behind The Lines (a.k.a. Regeneration)
In war, sanity is the ultimate casualty.
Jonathan Pryce (Tomorrow Never Dies, Evita, The Age of Innocence) stars in this critically acclaimed, emotionally electrifying story of war's devastating impact on a group of World War I soldiers - and on the doctor who risks his own grip on reality to treat them.
Dr. William Rivers (Pryce) is a psychiatrist in a moral straightjacket. At a respected Scottish asylum, he heals shell-shocked soldiers... so he can reluctantly send them back to the unspeakable carnage of the European trenches. Then he encounters an intriguingly different kind of patient. Siegfried (James Wilby) is a brilliant, courageous war hero sent to the asylum for publishing an outspoken anti-war pamphlet. As Rivers and Siegfried each struggle to cope with memories of the war's nightmarish brutality, the line between patient and doctor begins to blur. Now the fight for sanity in the midst of an insane conflict becomes the most desperate life and death battle of all.

Behind the lines follows a group of suffering PTSD/shell shocked soldiers during WWI during their treatment the Craiglockhart war hospital outside of Edinburgh. The story focuses primarily on Dr. Rivers, the hospital psychiatrist who seems to be suffering from internal conflict of his own which seems to stem from the discrepancy of his outward pro-war attitude with his inward anti-war beliefs.
Actors in the film do an incredible job in portraying the living hell these soldiers continued to endure even after escaping the hell that is war. Shocking, inspiring, and a must-see for those interested in the history of war and/or psychology.Highly Recomended Film - Giggles79
This film takes place in a British officer’s mental hospital where, in 1917, Sassoon, a completely sane decorated officer, is sent because of his outspoken opposition to an unjust war. The psychiatrist Dr. Rivers is charged with the task of making Sassoon change is mind about the war. Or to quote Dr. Rivers: “To make a sane man mad enough to want to rejoin the war.” All the patients suffer from some form of post traumatic stress disorder including Dr. Rivers. This film tells the story of how these men are haunted by daemons from their pasts.
This film is a drama and not an action flick but is important as it shows a different type of war. In the aftermath of battles fought on the planes there is another type of battle, A battle fought in the mind.
