Set in the late 1800s, Molokai is the moving and epic story of Father Damien, who gave his life to bring dignity and hope to a colony of lepers. Faced with appalling conditions on a remote Hawaiian island, Father Damien set about creating a community and ultimately gave his life to this mission. I'm surprised not more people know about this movie. At the same time, I'm glad that I have the opportunity to be the first one to review it on zip.
Molokai the Story of Father Damien is a wonderful adaptation of a true story. The acting is brilliant, with Father Damien played by David Wenham (Lord of the Rings). Peter O'Toole has a smaller but very momorable role.
Very well directed, what I liked was that the story did not necessarily make Father Damien into a hero per se, it let his actions transform him into one. There's a moment when somebody tells him: "you're the miracle these people need." at this, Father Damien immediately brushes it off and the scene ends. No dramatic music, no deliberate manipulation from the director.
While the lepers are sometimes too gruesome even to look it, the story will capture you and you won't forget it easily.
Great find, well recommended.
