Sonic Youth: Corporate Ghost - Videos 1990-2002
Corporate Ghost - The Videos: 1990-2002 features 23 official (and unofficial) group videos spanning all seven of Sonic Youth's major label albums as well as their cover of "Superstar" from 1994's Carpenters tribute album, If I Were A Carpenter. Also included is a rare solo video from bandmember Thurston Moore's 1995 solo album Psychic Hearts (for "Ono Soul") and three previously unreleased clips. Known for their history of working with young directors who then move on to great acclaim, Corporate Ghost also features over three hours of commentary and interviews from the members of Sonic Youth as well as directors including (among others): Spike Jonze (Being John Malkovich, Adaptation), Todd Haynes (Far From Heaven), Tamra Davis (CB4, Billy Madison), and Mark Romanek (One Hour Photo). In addition, there are new interviews with some actors from the videos including Jason Lee (Almost Famous, Chasing Amy) discussing his first on-screen role in the Sonic Youth video for "100%" and Kathleen Hanna (originally of the band Bikini Kill and now with Le Tigre) speaking of her role in "Bull In The Heather". Spike Jonze provides a narrated photo montage of his long friendship with the band as well as contributions to a few of the band's videos ("100%," "The Diamond Sea"). Other bonus material includes 19 minutes of bonus interviews, a fan-created short film called "My Sonic Room" plus hidden bonus features.

This is a great DVD if you already know the
music of Sonic Youth. They come out of the
no-wave movement or noise rock. The videos are
sometimes experimental, akin to the music.
It can be stream of consciousness or impresssionistic. Some lyrics provide narrative
content and are "illustrated" by the visuals.
Interesting if you are willing to go along.

A great collection of videos. Sonic Youth are as good a rock band as there ever was. I'm hoping to see another DVD come out featuring their earlier work. That being said, this has some great stuff on it. It spans the videos from Goo through Murray St. and shows a really diverse collection of videos. The videos vary from the polished and timely "Sugar Kane" to an obviously off the cuff "Disconnection Notice". The diversity of production in the videos emulates the diversity of the band's material over their whole career, occasionally sounding tight and polished, and occasionally just jamming it out. Fans will love the collection as well as the admittedly odd extras.
