Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
Acclaimed director Tim Burton brings his vividly imaginative style to the beloved Roald Dahl classic Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, about eccentric chocolatier Willy Wonka (Johnny Depp) and Charlie, a good-hearted boy from a poor family who lives in the shadow of Wonka's extraordinary factory. Long isolated from his own family, Wonka launches a worldwide contest to select an heir to his candy empire. Five lucky children, including Charlie, draw golden tickets from Wonka chocolate bars and win a guided tour of the legendary candy-making facility that no outsider has seen in 15 years. Dazzled by one amazing sight after another, Charlie is drawn into Wonka's fantastic world in this astonishing and enduring story.

Huge improvement over the dismal '71 adaptation. - estefan
Tim Burton brings to life one of the hallmarks of young peoples' literature, respecting the brilliant work laid down by Roald Dahl and mixing it nicely with his own sense of humour and visual flair for the wonderful. The screenplay has the right amount of charm, heart and message that does not feel cloying and its sharp wit is handled so well. Johnny Depp brings a unique touch to Willy Wonka, making him so funny and wacky and it's evident the chocolate genius behind that madness. Freddie Highmore is also a perfect Charlie and the other child actors fit their roles very well, too. Very rare is it to see a top-notch ensemble of child actors and that makes the casting all the more impressive. Danny Elfman's music is wonderful as usual and using Dahl's original lyrics over repetitive, annoying lyrics was a smart decision on the filmmaker's part. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is full of whimsy and charm, capturing the spirit of Dahl's work very, very well.Pure Imagination - hilkayaker
I really enjoyed this film. I was a big fan of the original, but this one is so different from it I don't think they can be fairly compared to each other. I loved the boat scene in this movie. How they updated the kids (Mike Teevee being big on video games) was good. I wasn't a big fan of the oompa loompa's, or their songs. I thought they were a little creepy and the songs not as catching as the original. But overall I really enjoyed the film and would recomend it to everyone. What a Surprise - baam
I rented this movie way after the original hype, because to be honest, I expected to hate it. I thought nobody could touch the original Willy Wonka. I ended up loving this. Johnny Depp is excellent and once again impresses me as an actor. I love the twist put on this version - so extreme that I barely even consider this a remake. Its obvious Burton was not trying to "remake" this movie - more like create his own version. What a success. Love that Charlie and his family are still a lovable bunch. Wonka is even more odd and dismissive in this movie (but you'd expect that with the Depp & Burton pairing). Loved the music, found myself singing it after the movie was over, embarassingly enough.
