Bukowski: Born Into This
Comprehensive documentary of Charles Bukowski (1920-1994), one of those rare writers whose work created a myth of epic proportions around its creator. Over the years, the name Bukowski has become synonymous with drinking and fighting, seedy barrooms and foul-mouthed prostitutes, low-paying jobs and roach-infested hotel rooms. For readers, Bukowski has come to personify the lower depths of human existence; in a direct, powerful and very personal style, he writes about an unthinkable but very real degradation-degradation based on his own life experiences.

a very informative and entertaining documentary - tbird
i found this film very captivating. it has some readings of his poetry, you get insight into his life and the women he was involved with and the various jobs he endured. he was a very interesting, crusty character with a raw talent for honest writing. was he the greatest writer of his time?
that is a good question.he is one of my favorites.Born into crap! - Cricri7
I am a die hard fan of documentaries! I love watching them and learning about new things or discovering other sides to a story I did not know before. I zipped this documentary to learn more about Bukowski the author. I did not know I would be watching Bukowski talk about sex and women in the most degrading way possible! I am far from a prude but hearing him, and one of his friends laughing while talking about it, describe women with the C word and talking about her fat a** was a bit much for me. I did not learn much about this body of work but only about his drunkenness and sexual exploits.
I read the other reviews, all excellent, and wonder what I did not get that the others got but I can't condone what is related in this documentary. I was not able to get past the demeaning way he was talking about women and that is the only subject they talked about, that and alcohol, and they never seemed to get around to talking about his writing. I did not learn anything about Bukowski the author in this documentary. If you want to hear about his drinking and sexual habits you should zip this but stay clear if you want to hear about his writing!Well Done - Big_J
I was really surprised by the quality of this doc. Bukowski is perhaps the greatest writer I've ever had the pleasure of reading. Bono hits the mark in this film when he says Bukowski is stripped down, just the writing you need, bare bones - this is true - no fluff in his books. His novels & poetry can make you laugh out loud and cry sometimes on the same pagge. If you've never read anything by the man, then this movie goes through a few of his novels and is a pretty good starting point. If you haven't read Post Office yet do yourself a favour & just go buy it! It was really nice to see the source material for those of us that have read the books. The great thing about this film is how it shows the other side of Hank - the man behind the myth so to speak. Anyone of his novels will reveal that there was a sadness behind everything and there a couple of parts where you actually see him crying, reflective or abusive. The interviews are brilliant. Recomended to fans and the curious. A very well made film.
