Know how I know you’re gay? Cause you have not zipped this movie yet. :) I laughed, I cried and I groaned ... well I cried from laughing - I think what I liked most about this movie was even though the content or premise was on the side of ridiculous it had a realness to it that was hard to describe. Steve Carell makes us believe in his character and makes us care about him and what happens to this poor hapless hero... its actually believable that a guy could be just that geeky and yet not to the point where he's hard to like but just not very good with women and he basically stops trying... it wasn't so far fetched to take you out of the movie and make you start rolling your eyes, and I think the believability of the plot is what makes the joke work so well... you don't mind laughing because the film makers aren't making you feel stupid for putting up with their story line... so often we get movies, especially comedies, where the plot is almost an after thought and they rely solely on sight gags and gross jokes to make the movie work and more often than not it doesn't. Kudo's to 40-Year-Old Virgin for giving me a solid story and characters I cared about and believed, while simultaneously allowing me to laugh so hard milk came out my nose and I had to pee.Sex Romp Has a Heart - eoguy
Sex comedies are a dime a dozen. Sex comedies with some humour are a little more pricey. The real gems of the genre are the rare few who pass from being a racy comedy to being a relatable story with a whole lot of heart. The film manages to pack in lots of sexual humour and still leave room for a plotline, some human moments and a heap of charm.
This one marks the first time that comedian Steve Carell, best known as Brick Tamland from Anchorman, has been handed the reins for a feature film. He seizes the role with a subtle energy that begins during an opening credits sequence that’s equally embarrassing as it is familiar to any male in the audience. The moment could’ve been handled crudely, but Carell and director Judd Apatow manage to make it charming in the most unlikely of ways. The difference comes down to the shot choices, which mostly leave the grossness factor to the imagination and instead runs with the concept.
The movie could’ve fallen into any number of traps at this point, as it’s title denotes a whole series of cheap jokes and forced nudity. Instead, the film becomes a team-effort comedy where the supporting cast, most notably Paul Rudd, Seth Rogen, and Romany Malco, portray the somewhat sleezy co-workers determined to snag some women for the contender. Despite their efforts, Andy gravitates towards Catherine Keener’s character, an entrepreneur set on making her fortune by selling other people’s junk on Ebay. It’s practically love at first sight. Keener injects a sense of casting credibility into the project that helps jettison this piece from American Pie status to a movie with some real sense of pride.
The 40-Year-Old Virgin almost feels like a fluke success. It could have fallen apart during the execution, but a talented group of comedians, who also happen to be solid actors, make this movie work on every level.
