Amazing story and quite well handled by Clint Eastwood, the director. Must be very difficult trying to make a movie from someone else's perspective. Taking out the few Ra,Ra, bits of the movie the overall feeling was one of genuinness if there is such a word. Not Great but certainly a Solid War Film - Cine
I have watched hundreds of war films from around the world...and continue to do so as I discover them. I read what the professionals say about films and often make the mistake of reading what other viewers say as well. I don't let any negativity dissuade me from watching a film I have my heart set on. I simply cannot take the chance of missing a good one. This was a good film. I went in with little expectation but I was rewarded with historical drama with realistic military procedure and excitement. It works for me. I found there was no overacting.....simple understated performance with nice battles scenes. I was even horrified by a scene or two where the Japanese were mistreating civilians. If you are a war movie fan.....I think this will give you your fix.A good old-fashioned World War II movie - Terry2
Taking place during World War II, 511 POW's have been entrapped in a camp for 3 years. Beginning to give up hope they will ever be rescued, a group of Rangers goes on a dangerous mission to try and save them.
Set in the Philippines in 1945, THE GREAT RAID tells the true story of the 6th Ranger Battalion, (it chronicles the five-day mission) under the command of Colonel Henry Mucci (Benjamin Bratt) who undertake a daring rescue mission against all odds. Traveling thirty miles behind enemy lines, the 6th Ranger Battalion aims to liberate 511 American prisoners-of-war from the notorious Cabanatuan Japanese POW camp in the most audacious rescue ever.
A neo-noir specialist John Dahl handles characters and action with no-nonsense intelligence. Benjamin Bratt (Col. Mucci), Joseph Fiennes (Maj.Gibson), James Franco (Captain Prince) and Connie Nielsen (civilian resistance leader, real-life hero and Gibson's (fictional) would-be lover Margaret Utinsky) perform superbly.
THE GREAT RAID has earned its stripes, honouring the brave men who carried out the most successful rescue mission in U.S. military history.
