Mr. Hobbs Takes A Vacation
When world-weary St. Louis banker and father Roger Hobbs (James Stewart) suggests to his wife (Maureen O'Hara) that the two of them enjoy a quiet vacation at the beach, she thinks a family reunion is a better idea. So, they compromise - and no less than ten family members show up on their not-so-romantic getaway! From antiquated plumbing in their rental house to fueds between their married daughter and her husband to out-of-control kids and crazed teenage love, it begins to seem to Hobbs that getting back to the daily grind might bring relief from this "vacation."

A Solid Family Comedy - Tinseltown_Tess
I just read a biography of James Stewart, and this movie got a sound thrashing, but I just couldn't stay away. I loved it, and I wish he'd done more like it. The charm of this film is Stewart himself, from his expressions of utter bafflement, to his comical loss of temper. He's perfect, and he makes the movie perfect.
It feels quite a bit like an old Disney live action film, but there's so much more. O'Hara and Stewart are believable as a middle aged couple desperate for their children's happiness, but determined not to meddle. It isn't all sweetness and sugar though, as you see when Jimmy learns how to walk while bird watching, or when he ends up in a steamy situation with My Friend Irma's Marie Wilson.
It's a good family film, with solid teenage actors who play their parts well. Some of the nuances will be over smaller fry's heads, including the undercurrents of marital discord and infidelity, but it will still be entertaining for all ages.
If you like Jimmy, you love it. If you don't like Jimmy, I still think it will win you over.Well worth watching again (and again)! - Muggins
This is one of those rare films that I never tire of watching again and again!
James Stewart is absolutely spot-on as Roger Hobbs, the patriarch of one of the earliest dysfunctional families to be shown on the big screen! Mr. Stewart's comedic timing is second to none and he is very well supported in this movie by the ever lovely Maureen O'Hara as his wife Peggy. Early roles here for John Saxon, Fabian and Laurie Peters.
This film is a real pleasure to watch, good family fun - hard to believe it was filmed 44 years ago but it still holds up extremely well! Most enjoyable and I highly recommend it - terrific film for a rainy Sunday afternoon!I forgot how good he was at Comedy - Trixnbun
Whenever one thinks about James Stewart, the first thought that pops to mind is It's a wonderful life. We forget about his comedy roles such as Harvey, and this one.
I found it a very sweet family comedy, remincent of the older times. No morals in this one, no big singing numbers (kind of nice after the beach movies of this time) Just a poor guy who wants to take his wife to Paris or somewhere and ends up with the entire family at a beach house that has just a few issues for the month.
The Young TV addicted son, the teenage daughter who just got braces, the cook who keeps quiting and coming back, the older daughter who brings her family, 2 kids and husband along, and the other daughter with the baby.
Nothing goes right for him, he gets lost at sea, the pipes in the house act up.. you name it it happens.. and he just goes with the flow ..
Not an Emmy winner, but Worth the watch
