This is a nice little title, completely unpretentious, and with just a hint of acidity... It's not meant to be a comedy sketch; it's only meant as a very basic introduction to the sometimes arduous task of understanding wine and gives good reasons why the average person should listen only to his or her own palate. It made me want to go have a glass of wine, anyway. One little point--the running time on the disc and on this site claims that it's 92 minutes. It's not even close to that; it's 43 minutes. Tack on the fifteen minutes of trailers before the menu and that brings it to an hour, but under no stretch of the imagination is it ninety-odd minutes; a definite error on the part of Zip, I think.
If you're searching for Fawlty Towers crossed with Monty Python (which seems to be what most viewers of John Cleese always expect) this isn't what you're looking for. It's an informative little lecture on the basics of wine selection, with a touch of humour thrown in. I enjoyed it.Annoyed as well as confused - GreatMalvern
Given the title, and the star this dvd was disappointing as I expected a really creative approach to the subject. I can see the benefit of trying to inject some humour but this was really lame. The subject matter covered some of the basics of wine but after the first 15 minutes we couldn't stand to watch it any more.
Every time I thought he might be going somewhere the annoyance factor dropped in and We were forced to groan again. The people at the party were unbelievable characters and they didn't help the flow of the film. The quality of the photography was very poor and the setup looked like it was not only low budget but purposefully meant to be that way. I would look elsewhere for a wine primer. Save you time and money. Not bad ... - rizlas_sister
This well-titled dvd didn't disappoint. As a relative newbie to the wonderful world of wine, I was really happy with how this film progressed. It really does give you some excellent starting points, and I truly appreciated how John emphasized that your personal preference be based on your own opinions instead of what someone else thinks you should like, or by the price of the wine. He walks the viewer through the basics and afterwards you feel more confident about how to approach buying, storing, pairing, and drinking wine.
My only complaints would be that the run time was short, and the film focused on wines in California. Regardless, the film is a good choice if you want to learn more about wine.
