The Greatest Game Ever Played
Based on a True Story.
From the studio that brought you The Rookie and Miracle and director Bill Paxton, comes a story of courage, passion and of the greatest American sports hero you have probably never heard of... An amateur player from a working class family, Francis Ouimet - played by Shia LaBeouf (Holes) - shocked the golf world when at the 1913 U.S. Open, flanked by his 10-year-old caddie, he defeated his idol, the defending British champion Harry Vardon - played by Stephen Dillane. An unlikely match-up - "the ingenue versus the seasoned champ" - theirs was the greatest match the sport had ever known. Caught between a world of hardship and a beckoning life of privilege, Francis needed to prove his unfailing will and ability to make it to the tournament. Elias Koteas (Traffic, Ararat) plays Francis' tough, hardworking father. Newcomer Peyton List is Sarah Wallis, the beautiful young woman, who catches Francis' heart. Joshua Flitter is Eddie Lowery, the pint sized caddie who helps Francis find his way through the troublesome fairways to victory.

We watched this movie the night before the Masters.
What a great movie and all based on a true story.
Really opens your eyes to how elite golf used to be and peasants could play the game, win tournaments but yet could not be members at the golf clubs they represented.
Shia LaBeouf is believable in his role.
The golf history is interesting.
Be sure to watch the special features at the end of the movie to learn more about the great golfer this movie was based on.great movie - Raffus
whoa this is based on a true story? I'm a sucker for underdog sports movies. What an uplifting movie this was. I will definitely buy it if I can find it anywhere. This movie was so well done. You can feel the tension and the emotions in this movie. The father son side story was a really nice touch to the already great movie. All the actors down to the plucky little caddy did an absolutely great job. I believed in the characters and I definitely felt for every one of them as well. Great characters and probably one of the most fun sports movies I've seen yet.Stirring, but Formulaic film - CaptainPhil
Budding star Shia LeBeouf stars in a breakout performance in the true story of a caddie turned pro. Strong performances by all principal cast members overshaddow the somewhat forumulaic and blatently pro-American film. You know exactly what is going to happen, but knowing it acutally DID happen does draw you in. Watch for this kid Shia LeBeouf, as I think we just got a taste of his talent in this film.
Great for families and kids, in true Disney fashion, it's an all-around good night's viewing. Parents will enjoy watching this with their kids, as I did.
Some good special features, including a 1963 interview with the main character of the film.
