Another Character Driven Film from Mike Leigh - Gregg
Here we have another slice of life drama/comedy from British Director Mike Leigh (Secrets and Lies, Vera Drake, Naked, Topsy Turvy).
Career Girls is the story of two roommates/friends (Katrin Cartlidge and Lynda Steadman) from university re-uniting for a weekend some 6 years after their graduation. The story is told through extensive use of flashbacks, and the actors all manage to convey considerable development to their characters although this is obviously made easier by the extremely quirky behavior of both women during the university period flashbacks.
Of the two leads (Katrin Cartlidge) had the decidedly more successful career, but died of complications from Pneumonia in 2002. The supporting cast also includes a pre-Lord of the Rings Andy Serkis.
Overall it’s a nice story of friendship with very good performances from both leads, filled with emotional highs and lows. It’s not up to the level of Leigh’s “Secrets and Lies” from the preceding year but it is worth seeing for those that enjoy a character driven dramatic story.Don't Get Hung Up On Plot - Big_J
If you don't get to hung up on plot... ot lack of one... this is actually quite an enjoyable film. The acting is amazing and the story line is quite realistic altough tragic and a bit inconclusive. If you can watch this entire film unmoved you are a stronger person than me. I found some of it quite sad... well worth the watch though.
