Unexpectedly good - QuartInSession

I've been on a Cillian Murphy kick lately (or, rather, an Irish movie kick - Cillian seems to be in a ton of them, which is understandable), and I thought he was fantastic here.

My only peeve was the lack of subtitles. "Kitten" spoke very softly at times, and that, combined with the character's accents, meant I missed more than a few lines.

The movie was filmed beautifully, from small town Ireland to big city London, and I thought it did a very good job of bringing a difficult subject to life.

I wasn't quite sure what to expect from this one - I've enjoyed many of Jordan's movies, but I wasn't overly interested in the story. However, I was very pleasantly surprised. I thought Cillian Murphy did a great job, I've enjoyed him in a few movies before (though I can't remember any of them right now except Batman Begins) but I thought he was excellent here. After a while I forgot I was watching him and just got invested in the story instead. The supporting cast was really good too, especially Liam Neeson. I thought the last 20 minutes were the most effective - wrapping the movie up in the happy ending it deserves, even things weren't really all *that* resolved. But that's how Kitten would have wanted it...

Fantastic - Filmgal

I saw this film at the Toronto Film Festival and loved it, even more so after director Neil Jordan and actor Cillian Murphy got up on stage and talked about it.

Based on the novel of the same name, Cillian Murphy plays Kitten, a young man in the late '60s/early '70's searching for his birth mother while exploring his sexuality through cross-dressing. Kitten is rather innocent and just happens upson unusual circumstances such as gun smuggling for the IRA, etc. There are both sad and comedic moments in the film as well as a strong storyline revolving around friendships and knowing yourself. The movie can be described as whimsical, bittersweet, and is best compared to a film like Velvet Goldmine.

Cillian Murphy gives a remarkable performance as Kitten and all the supporting actors, most of whom are regulars in Jordan's films, do a great job as well.

The film isn't for everyone as it deals with issues of sexuality, transgenderism, and there is some violence in the film. I think it is one of Neil Jordan's best films to date and one which shows the incredible acting range of Cillian Murphy. Required viewing if you are a fan of the director and cast for sure, or if you are in the mood for a different type of film.
