A Decent, Little-Known Movie - MovieProf
I had never heard of "Speak" until only recently when I was given the novel to read. The novel deals with a Melinda, grade nine student's internal struggle of coming to grips with being raped. Unfortunately, only her rapist knows the event occurred, and Melina's dysfunctional family and former friends think she's gone off the deep end for some other reason. The novel does an excellent job of containing the rape until the two-thirds mark, whereas the film indicates and then presents the event much earlier.
I thought the film version did an adequate job in capturing the essence of the novel, but there were some minor distractions for me: the music, first of all, is often out of touch with the mood being presented on the screen. I was also disppointed with the giving away of the rape far too early, and the minor changes in the ending. All in all, though, a decent film.Wonderful - mc4242
Haunting and traumatizing. I sat riveted for two hours, feeling like I was living inside the character's life. I had a physical, visceral reaction to this film, I felt faint and nauseated and tense.
This movie felt like real life but more artistic. It was honest and genuine and just amazing. An unheard Voice - movie_goer
Speak is the first Novel, i couldn't let out of my sight or stop reading. It also happens to be the only time i finished reading more then 400 pages in 24 hours. Laurie Halse Anderson's book captivated my heart.
Kristen Stewart is: Melinda Pained with despair and sufferance she's lost in her own head. with only 1 solution to coping- in silence. For me i enjoyed the movie and Book immensely because i am Melinda the girl you pass in the hall without taking a second glance, who eats lunch in the art room. And the one who nobody listens too. I didn't go throught the same thing as her but i also had a lousy childhood. I just want to say there is a light at every tunnel sometimes you just have to believe that everything will work it's way out.
