Transamerica
Bree (Felicity Huffman) is a man living as a woman, waiting for an operation so he can fully become female. One day, he receives a phone call from his son, Toby (Kevin Zegers), who seems to be the product of a sexual encounter he had years ago with a woman. Toby is in jail in New York, so Bree flies there from Los Angeles to see if he can get him out.

A 'B' film with an 'A+' leading performance. - Nikki
A big part of the movie's success is Huffman's irresistible and remarkable performance as Bree. Her performance is one of those rare pieces of acting that actually deserves to be labeled a tour de force. Huffman makes Transamerica worth seeing.
A 'B' film with an 'A+' leading performance ...A movie about transsexuality that isn't about transsexuality - purvis1359
My expectation of "Transamerica" prior to actually watching the film was that the story would be based on the protaganists transsexuality. In many films pertaining to sexual identity or orientation, the plot revolves around this aspect. In "Transamerica", however, nothing could be further from the truth; although the main character Bree (played by Felicty Huffman) is a male-to-female transsexual, this fact secondary to the story itself.
The story is that of Bree (formerly Stanley), a female transsexual one week away from her gender reassignment surgery, who learns that she had fathered a now-teenage child with a partner she had many years earlier. As a result of this revelation, Bree's psychiatrist decides to postpone the surgery until she meets her son. Bree then travels across the country to bail her son out of prison, all the while keeping her real identity as his parent secret (he believes she is a representive from a church). The movie follows these two as the travel back across the country to California.
I thoroughly enjoyed this film, which blew my expectations out of the water. Although the subject matter may be a little uncomfortable for some viewers, once you get over this, the plot is both compelling and heart-warming. Felicity Huffman does an excellent job of portraying Bree; every aspect aspect of her character is executed with success, down to the voice, the walk, and the mannerisms.
Do not let the subject matter prevent you from renting this amazing movie; "Transamerica" may not seem like a film the would appeal to you, but give it a try and I promise that you will be pleasantly surprised.WOW!!! - lmav1
This is a wonderful movie!! Felicity Huffman is absolutely incredible!!! Her performance is Oscar-worthy!!! (don't let the DVD cover fool you). It is a journey of discovery of self and a discovery of a son who comes into her life just before her surgery to become a woman. They travel across country and make discoveries about themselves and each other. Kevin Zegers fits the role of Toby to a 'T'. His performance is amazing. Watch for Graham Greene's role. I wish something more would have developed there.
This is a journey that both Bree and Toby undertake and both discover themselves, each other and their relationship together. It is a journey of love, anger, hate, mistrust and reconciliation. It is a witty and touching movie that is highly enjoyable.
