Dominion: Prequel to The Exorcist
A supernatural evil comes to a post-World War II archaeological dig in British East Africa. Or is the escalating toll of death and dread the inevitable result of human nature? Father Merrin witnessed man at his worst during the war, and it led him to abandon the priesthood. Now supervising the excavation of a mysterious church, he must rediscover his faith to combat a foe who's cunning, unrelenting and immortal.
Dominion: Prequel to The Exorcist is the bold, eye-filling revelation of events that thrust Merrin (Stellan Skarsgard) onto a showdown course with mankind's most insidious enemy. Paul Schrader (director of Auto Focus, screenwriter of Taxi Driver) directs, bringing insight and palpable terror to the newest chapter of the famed horror series whose battleground is the human soul. The fear is here. It will shake you to your core.

First of all, this is NOT a scary movie. I didn't find myself scared at all. However, the story and the acting was really good as well as the film's overall effect. If the special effects were better, I'd give this a 5 star.
Btw I've watched all of the films in the Exorcist series and I still must say that Exorcist II: The Heretic is the best one in the series.
If you're a Christian, you'll have a greater appreciation of this movie. Thats all I have to say.Can you say: Over the Top? - Skeeter1
I was expecting an awful lot from a film directed by Paul Schrader - the man who wrote Taxi Driver and Hard Core. But somehow, he found a way to make every aspect of the film look cheap and the horror of its ideas feel second-hand and cheezy. All of the actors - some of them very good in other things (like Stellan Skarsgard) - performed like they were auditioning for a highschool play: BIG! INTENSE! LOUD! Scenes that should have been suspenseful were just dumb and sometimes downright funny.Disappointing. - cathyottawa
This movie had such a great story behind it. Paul Schrader, the director, was fired after submitting this movie to the producers, because he refused to reshoot any of it, as they wanted him to(they wanted more blood & guts).
So they hire Renny Harlin, and he reshoots the movie, using the same actors. It tanked at the box office and got bad reviews. Some genius at the studio said "Hey, we have the Schrader version sitting on the shelf. Why not release it, and see if we can recoup some money?".
So they did. It got respectable reviews.
I honestly don't know what the critics saw in this version either. The effects aren't good. The acting isn't great. And the story is dopey.
If nothing else, these movies will make for an interresting lesson in film schools - the importance of a director's vision.
