Modigliani
His passion was life. His obsession was art.
Andy Garcia brings to life artistic genius Amedeo Modigliani's story of tragic love, rivalry and excess in the midst of art history's golden age when greats like Picasso, Rivera, Cocteau and Modigliani held court in the salons of post-WWI Paris.

Modigliani - RoddyPiper
This is not a biography of the artist, but was inspired by factual events in his life, says the brief notice that flashes on the screen at the start of the movie.
Perhaps the movie should have had the kind of fully-fleshed-out warning that writer Paul St. Pierre posts in the introduction to his great short story collection “Smith and Other Events” – where he says "I have exercised the prerogative of the fiction writer, which is to try to tell the truth with a lot of lies." He then goes on to explain that for example while it is TRUE there is a Lakeview Hotel in the Chilcotin, it is NOT TRUE that its owner/manager "threatened to evict a guest who declined to join a drinking party. That was Benny Abbott of the Maple Leaf."
Let me paraphrase St. Pierre as though he were explaining the artistic license of this film:
“This movie does not record true life events exactly as they happened: for example, when the great love of Modigliani’s life, model/artist Jeanne Hebuterne, dies shortly after Modigliani, the film shows her body being buried next to him after her funeral; that’s not true, that did not happen. Her body had to be moved next to his ten years later.”
So my point (since almost every negative review I have seen complains about the movie being historically inaccurate), is this: so what? The specific details of Amedeo Modigliani and his actual life we can get from any of a thousand art histories. But if you want to experience an attempt to get at what this great artist may have really been like – and how and why a person like him may create and live the kind of life he did . . . then see and enjoy this film.a movie of art & culture - Jahson
This one of the best artist bio movies I've seen. Not only do you get to see through the eyes of a truly great artist, you get to hang out with a young Picasso, Diego Rivera and many other great artist. If your at all into art & culture you will like this well done, excellently acted period piece....warning: movie with a slow clap scene - Rudy1
One of this movie's key moments is defined by the SLOW CLAP... you know, when dead silence is broken by one person starting to clap, and then everyone else joins in. This should be enough for you to run away screaming. This movie is painfully melodramatic and factually inaccurate and confusing. I swear you won't care if Modigliani lives or dies. Think of it as more than two hours of your life you'll never get back.
