God's Little Acre
Forbidden love in the hot Georgia sun.
Based on the provocative best-selling novel, a beautiful, primitive Georgia and its people are brought to life in this sadly comic tragedy. Poor white sharecropper Ty Ty Warden (Robert Ryan) is convinced that a golden treasure lies hidden, buried away somewhere on his land. As his impoverished family languishes, he spends years digging holes in his land, rather than cultivating it. His obsession with finding the easy answer to life's problems is reflected by those around him, as they all seek their own impossible dreams.

Southern Gothic Melodramedy - jagfilm
Tonally all over the place, Anthony Mann's Southern comedy-drama-parody never quite finds a note to settle on. The result is a film that shifts creakily from high melodrama, to camp farce to something in between without having us really care about the characters. While the film's late fifteen minutes are strong, it doesn't make up for the journey there. Both mocking and embracing its character's "God's Little Acre" is an interesting but failed exercise.
