King Kong
Ann Darrow (Naomi Watts), an actress from the world of vaudeville, finds herself out of a job in Depression-era New York. Her luck changes when she meets Carl Denham (Jack Black). Denham is an entrepreneur, raconteur, adventurer and filmmaker who is struggling to make a name for himself in the entertainment industry. Bold, ebullient and charismatic, Denham has a natural sense of showmanship and an appetite for greatness, which ultimately leads to catastrophe.
Meanwhile, Jack Driscoll (Adrien Brody), a New York playwright, finds his heart and physical courage are put to the test when a gigantic ape is captured in the wild and brought to civilization.

What does one do after filming, arguably, the greatest trilogy of all time? If you're director Peter Jackson you tackle King Kong but of course. Jackson's version of King Kong stays true to the original and takes it to new heights - and depths - with thanks to the wonder that is CG!. When struggling vaudeville actress Ann Darrow (Naomi Watts) is picked up by the morally-bereft filmmaker Carl Denham (Jack Black) and convinced to join him on a steamer to Singapore, the stage is set. Denham has a layover planned en route to the notorious Skull Island and there, with the convenient advent of a quick love affair between Darrow and screen writer Jack Driscoll (Adrian Brody), the King Kong adventure really takes shape. Jackson pulls out all the stops and gives us an action packed, seat-of-your-pants ride alla Jurassic Park that towers above the wooden acting of Black (who is just dreadful) and Brody (who's ability to convey any passion is as empty as King Kong is tall). But who cares really, the story here is about Kong and his girl and that story sells this film. While it was beauty that killed the beast true, the real beauty here is in Jackson's magnificent world. y rating for the thrill of it all 9 out of 10.Hail Kong - AandW
... But not this movie. Grief this was WAY too long. It just seemed to keep going and going and going. And most of it wasn't needed. It could have been easily trimmed down to 90 minutes (from 3 hours). This movie is more about dinosaurs than a giant gorilla, for crying out loud. Skip this one for sure. Jack Black is boring in this one, which is surprising because I like most of his work. But he proves here that he is best suited as a sidekick rather than the main attraction.King Kong: too long - Spookyfish
Peter Jackson has already proven he's an excellent film director, but that also creates a problem: he gets infinite leeway with his storytelling. As a result, you get a great movie that would be 50% better if it was 30% shorter.
This is a well-done movie and does an excellent job of creating sympathy for the ape. Even so, it spends far too much time on Skull Island as Peter Jackson beats you over the head with the mythical, giant creatures that live there. It's a visually impressive and definitely entertaining, but it definitely didn't have to be this long.
