Hammett
Francis Ford Coppola Presents "Hammett", directed by Wim Wenders
Retired private investigator-turned-novelist Dashiell Hammett thought that he had left his old life behind. But when his ex-boss consults him about a particularly difficult missing-persons assignment, Hammett feels obligated to get involved-only to become the target of a deadly crime ring and a corrupt police detective.
Academy Award nominee Frederic Forrest, Marilu Henner (TV's Taxi) and Peter Boyle (TV's Everybody Loves Raymond) star in this suspense thriller that takes you from the back alleys of Chinatown to the bedrooms of the San Francisco elite, and exposes the darkest side of the most prominent citizens.

Not all that bad a film noir, but it did feel a little disjointed. If you edited out all the scenes of smoking and drinking then the movie would have been 15 minutes long, mostly of Hammett getting beat up. A little more faithful to noir novels than movies in that the hero doesn't get the girl.As it is 1.5 stars. Wish I could have seen what Wenders had wanted to do with it. - Moir
When I read that the studio required Wenders to re-do 80% of the film (assuming this is correct information), I wondered if that explained how dislocated and non functional the film felt to me.
I think of an attempt to draw something while someone else is pushing on one's arm and someone else randomly poking the pen and finally takes the heart out of what one is trying to do. But perhaps this is just an attempt to rationalise how the director who did 'Wings of Desire' could have done something like this.
Or have I just totally missed something... like the kind of joke that sounds inane at first but someone else after hearing it five times starts laughing with appreciation at some absurd parody half the others have missed???
