This movie was pretty awful. This was my first time seeing it, and I imagine I would have enjoyed it more if I had watched it first as a child.
The entire premise is contrived and ridiculous, especially any scene involving the aged reporter.
Tom Hanks is wonderful, by far the best actor in the film by leaps and bounds. Worth the watch for any fans of Hanks. Can only be enjoyed in a "so bad it's good" kinda way - ZombieInvasion
A terrible terrible movie that I had a great time watching. "Mazes and Monsters" is a sorta "Reefer Madness" for the paranoia surrounding "Dungeons and Dragons" in the 80s. The movie features a young undiscovered Tom Hanks, playing a game called "Mazes and Monsters". The game drives Hanks into a cheesy delusional fit. There's not much to praise here. The acting and writing are hilariously wooden. The cinematography is so bad that you sometimes have trouble seeing peoples faces.
For anyone who has played "Dungeons and Dragons" the film demonstrates a utter lack of knowledge of the subject. Strangely, the characters playing the titular game seem like clean cut preppies with girlfriends. Nor are dice seemed to be needed to play this game. The hilarious scenes with the characters playing the "Mazes and Monsters" game, along with many featuring Tom Hanks running around in a cloak make the movie worth while in a so bad its good kinda way. Though, there are lots of tedious scenes in between these moments. Those who enjoy bad B-movies will get a kick out of this, others will not!some treasures should remain buried - raistlinsghost
I'll be direct with this review: This movie was absolutely atrocious.
I am a lifetime D&D fan, and remembered watching this movie when I was a kid, currently living my own life according to the First Edition rules. After just re-watching it, it turns out that what I did not remember about this movie was that it was actually designed to scare the crap out of parents by implying (or maybe outright clubbing over the head) that playing D&D (or M&M) would turn their kids into raving lunatics.
The dialogue is weak, the understanding of the film's subject is nonexistent, the schmaltzy elevator musak soundtrack that just won't stop playing is maddening, and the acting is just deplorable. Speaking of acting, after sitting through this flick you will seriously wonder if the person you just watched was the same Tom Hanks we all know and love. The only thing I can think of is 2 words: Acting Coach.
If you are a D&D fan looking to reminisce, do yourself a favour and hold out for the forthcoming Dragonlance cartoon due sometime Q3 2007, because this one will hurt worse than a delayed blast fireball.
