Verdi: La Traviata (Royal Opera)
Orchestra & Chorus of the Royal Opera House , Covent Garden
This famous performance of Verdi's romantic tragedy captures one of the most sensational debuts in operatic history. Singing Violetta for the first time was the young Romanian soprano, Angela Cheorghiu, whose remarkable interpretation reached the front pages of the world's press and led the BBC immediately to film the production. Equally notable was the masterly conducting of Sir Georg Solti and director Richard Eyre's stylish staging. This DVD presents the definitive record of a momentous occasion.

trivial traviata - dg--
although the lead roles of violetta and alfredo are well sung with both performers acutely aware of the line and style of verdi's music, and solti's conducting vital and well-paced, it's the acting, staging--and a very bland germont(nucci)--that brings this production down and renders it rather trivial to watch.
gheorghiu is in fine voice, singing with confidence and a range of colours, tones and inflections. lopardo, whose warm and youthful voice is ideal as the young lover, brings depth to his character, but this is a production to listen to as opposed to watch. buy the cd or rent zefferelli's earlier account of the opera with teresa stratas and placido domingo for a real visual experience.
