funny only for a five-year-old - sabatia
We ordered this movie based on another in which we had seen a great performance of one of the actors. Unfortunately, the humour in this movie seemed generally to be aimed at about the level of a five-year-old. Occasionally something really funny would transpire or be said, and we thought the level of wit might be improving. After about 15 minutes into the film we realized that this was not the case and we put the DVD back into its envelope, unfinished. What a shame. The title had such promise! So, don't waste your time on this one. There are many other funnier shows sush as "Are You Being Served" or "Dad's Army."good premise, weak result - anglomoviephile
The generaly strong combination of Gene Wilder, Madelaine Kahn and Marty Feldman can't quite pull off what could have been a great comedy. The strong supporting cast of Leo McKern (Rumpole of the Bailey) Roy Kinnear (Juggernaught) and Dom deluise seem content to ham up the comedy in Wilder's first attempt at writer/star/director.
The story of a younger brother to Sherlock Holmes who is jealous of his older brother fails to ignite guffaws of laughter. There are moments of good laughs and moments of chuckles but there are long tracts of strange musical numbers and flat jokes.
Yhe gist of the story revolves around a case that Sherlock tricks his younger brother into taking to move the villans of the piece off the scent of Sherlock himself. Sigersund Holmes(Wilder) is ablely assisted by a London detective with photographic hearing(Feldman). Kahn is the damsel in distress who is being blackmailed over a letter stolen from her employer, a member of Queen Victoria's court.
At 91 minutes the film is both too long and too short, one just wishes it had had more laughs.
An evening of light escapism, there are certainly films alot worse to watch.
