Although I was a tad too young to see this in the theater (two more years or so and I would have been home-free) I still love watching it. It still gives thrills and chills and
"You're gonna need a bigger boat" is still one of the best movie lines in all of movie-dom. I remember friends having the movie poster on their walls. (Does anyone remember the poster with the shark coming out of the toilet? Freaked me out for YEARS.)Don't Go in the Water! - MovieProf
It is likely that shark-lovers everywhere hate “Jaws,” not because it’s so scary, but because it caused a wave of negative feedback on sharks that still exists today. Everyone knows sharks can be dangerous; “Jaws” shows us just how dangerous they can be. And while it most certainly exaggerates their danger, in 1975, people everywhere thought twice about swimming in deep water.
Based on the novel by Peter Benchley, and starring Roy Scheider, Richard Dreyfuss, and Robert Shaw, and containing one of the most memorable films cores of all time, “Jaws” is the very best of its genre; it is everything a good horror/suspense film should have: strong performances from its stars, excellent special effects, and an engaging storyline. As well, it made a star out of its young director, Steven Spielberg.
Set in Amity, a small summer resort town on Amity Island, a killer shark emerges and begins stalking unsuspecting swimmers. It is up to police Chief Martin Brody (Scheider) and ichthyologist Matt Hooper (Dreyfuss) to figure out a way to identify and kill the shark before it’s too late. Add to the fact that the big July 4th weekend is just around the corner, the pressure is on to save the day. Brody eventually hires an eccentric old fisherman named Quint (Shaw) to kill the shark, and the last half of the film deals with a search and destroy mission of sorts.
“Jaws” created a whole new genre of animal killer films, but it is far and away the best of the bunch.A great suspense movie indeed - LittleJoe
Bring on a great story and wammo! Instant classic. This didn't take 20 years to become a classic. It was a classic the instant it come to the theaters. My dad always wanted to expose me to different styles and tastes to round out my personality. Maybe he went a bit too far with this movie for a young man of 10 years of age. I admit, I still get the heebee jeebees sometimes even swimming in a dark lake... I think I know why real suspense doesn't come from the special effects. It comes from great music and not seeing the threat that's attacking. You know why? Because someones imagination is always stronger then what he sees. It's what he doesn't see that he fears the most. And think of it, you're watching a movie and you know it's a shark that's eating. We all know a shark looks like. But we still get scared. That's good writting and also letting the audience use their imaginations. Loved this one. But I think I'll wat till my little one grows up a lot more before showing this one.
