Little Fish
The past is right here.
How do you learn to love again when the pain of the past won't let you go? When you're 32 with a troubled history and a doubtful future, it's a question that isn't so easy to answer. And for Tracy Heart(Cate Blanchett), it's a question she can no longer ignore.
The criminal aspirations of her brother Ray (Martin Henderson) and the emotional draw of troubled family friend and ex-footy star Lionel Dawson (Hugo Weaving), create friction for Tracy.
Tracy's bond of trust with her mother Janelle (Noni Hazlehurst) is tested and she has to confront her fears to find happiness. The tension in this story comes from the struggles of the heart... it's an unusual love story.

This movie has some great acting (Blanchett and Weaving are particularly great) and some interesting moments but overall it doesn't work that well. The direction is odd: lots of over-saturated shots and lots of slow-mo and lots of jump-cuts and I don't really know why. If they're meant to reflect Blanchett's mood, they should be confined to her scenes. The music is odd too, the score is a pretty boring repetitive little figure that seems appropriate to the slow-mo but nothing else. The soundtrack, on the other hand, is really crazy featuring lots of songs that sound famous but I can't place them. I have to look it up. The story is a little odd, as Blanchett is the central character but not really the central character in the climax. I don't know what to make of it. But Blanchett and Weaving are fantastic in it so watch it for that I guess.Falls Flat. - Jeefster
Big name actors and a sound story don't always make for an interesting movie if the movie isn't, well, interesting. It is gritty and the actors definitely portray their characters well, and yet you will find yourself somehow not being able to care about what happens to them. So without this personal connection it makes the movie slow and hard to follow. There is so much better fare out there, it might be wise to choose something else with a little more pizzazz. Unless a slow drama is in your cards for the night.
As for my next one: Transformers!! Now that should help me wake back up...If you like Mike Leigh films - Rural_Ontario
You'll like this film. If it seems lacking in high drama, that's appropriate for a story about ex-junkies who've had to give up just that. We do get the story of what happened four years ago when the mother of Tracy and Ray remembers that things all went horribly wrong for her children. Hugo Weaving's performance as a nervous, sensitive, pain-wracked, washed-up athlete and heroin addict is one of his best.
