Night Watch (Nochnoi Dozor)
The first chapter in an epic fantasy trilogy.
Ancient prophecy foretells that one day a "Great One" will arrive who can end the apocalyptic battle between Light and Dark conclusively. That time has arrived in Moscow - but which side will the Great One choose?
The first instalment of a trilogy based on the best-selling Russian sci-fi novels of Sergei Lukyanenko (which also include Day Watch and Dusk Watch).

I struggled with it a bit at first -- different characters look very similar, and the plot is hard to follow at first if you haven't read the book (and even if you have, unless you read it recently). However, it all comes together nicely about halfway through, and the look is unique and fun, and really helps create the mood.Fabulous - fung0
Whoever first called this film "the Russian Matrix" knew about as much about movies as Arnold Sczwartzenegger knows about quantum physics. Night Watch is a uniquely Russian, hallucinatory, visionary film. It conforms to no previous standards of vampire films, action films, or even conventional narrative. The story, ostensibly about an ancient battle between good and evil, is just a point of departure; Timur Bekmambetov has created a frenzied visual cacophony that rushes at the audience like a swarm of startled bats.
You're either ready for this or you're not. If you enjoy films that challenge your expectations, that take you one a weird visual trip to worlds previously unsuspected, that violently tear away your preconceptions, then Night Watch is a must-see. If you think all action movies should be clones of Die Hard or The Matrix, you've already missed the point; Hollywood has plenty of blockbusters lined up just for you.Should look at imports more often - Chris_W_(ON)
Was fairly impressed with the quality of this movie coming out of Russia, and was very intrigued by the premise of the story. Its not terribly original, a movie about a prophecy of a powerful other that will change the balance between good and evil. But I love movies about dark, underworld societies, living with us, but not with us, and this fit the bill perfectly. I was hoping it would have been a little more dark then it was, previews for it seemed that way. Movie is dubbed, but done well. Effects were quite good for a non-Hollywood based movie, and definitely left me wanting to search for more movie imports as the usual Hollywood fare seems to be spreading thin. Its the first of a trilogy, and definitely looking forward to the sequel.
