Lonesome Jim
Change your outlook. Change your life.
Jim (Casey Affleck) begrudgingly returns to his hometown in rural Indiana after failing to make it on his own in New York. He soon remembers why he left: a doting but overbearing mother (Mary Kay Place), a distant father (Seymour Cassel), and a depressed older brother (Kevin Corrigan) whose "accidents" seem suspect at best.
Jim is soon forced to take on his brother's duties -- working at his parents' factory and helping out with his two rambunctious nieces. Crippled by obligations and anxieties, Jim trudges on through every day monotones and the family's collapse after mom is mistakenly taken for a suburban drug smuggler.
Almost miraculously, hope springs from his developing relationship with a local nurse (Liv Tyler) and her young son, and Jim slowly learns to move forward without leaving anyone behind.

This is an odd film that is quite touching. Starts off rather bleak and depressing with the classic story of a kid coming back to live with parents after failure in the big city. The entire movie you want to shake Casey Affleck out of his depressive funk. Especially during his lack of coaching skills for kids. Some pretty humorous and touching moments. The movie finishes with some hope.Too many great things about this movie! - StanwyckFan
Casey Affleck's natural raspy-down voice was perfect for this role. I have never seen anyones eyes speak so loudly either. This movie was so refreshing and unique. Buschemi did great work, and i really hope he continues with directing because he does know what he's doing. I really can't say enough about how terrific this movie was. every single character was true to reality. perfectNot For everyone. - Jeefster
But if you're after one of those lovably quirky small Indie films, then this one will be right up your alley. It's methodically slow in a calculated way but still manages to keep your interest up, especially when you find yourself rooting for this depressed loser, who by the end of the movie turns out to be the most "normal" of all the supporting characters.
Casey plays his role to a "T" and has hair that has a life of it's own. If wierd details like this set you laughing then this one will be right up your alley. Loaded with bleak but realistic humour, this one gets my go-ahead but, like I've mentioned, may not be to everyone's liking...
