NOT GREAT BUT WORTH WATCHING - len1970
This may not be a super movie or a masterpiece but if all you want is to be entertained for a couple of hours then you may wanna watch this one, especially if you like baseball and played it when you were a kid. The movie has parts that it can do without but there are worse ones out there so just give it a try.Much better than I expected. - Largestill
Three "Losers" team up to play baseball against Little League kids to prove that all children should be given a chance to play; even if they're not that great.
When you see David Space or Rob Schneider's names in the title credits, normally they're only good for a few groaners and background characters. Surprisingly - with Jon Heder bringing excellent physical comedy to the forefront with his character - this movie provided some great moments.
Don't expect any Oscars here; but it's worth a rent if you have a rainy afternoon in.it could have been much worse... - Filmgal
The Benchwarmers wasn't exactly better than expected, but it could have been much worse than it actually is. The sense of humour is well-suited to the 8 year old crowd, but still offers a few laugh-out-loud moments. I never thought I would say this, but Rob Schneider is the best thing about this movie, playing the straight man to David Spade and Jon Heder.
An okay storyline which asks: what happens if the nerdy kids from elementary school grew up and formed their own baseball team against the new generation of kid bullies?
The answer is The Benchwarmers in which Gus (Schneider), Richie (Spade), and Clark (Heder) are form a team of 3 against the neighbourhood little league teams. The usual antics and jokes ensue with Jon Lovtiz as Mel, the now successful former nerd who sponsors The Benchwarmers in their round robin tournament to win a baseball stadium. Of course, there is a twist as one of The Benchwarmers is not who he appears to be.
Most of the laugh out loud moments come from Spade, while Heder is more of an obnoxious distraction as the man-boy paper carrier. Schneider- who I often dislike- downplays his usual comedic persona so over the top in the Deuce Bigalow films, and is also the one who gets the fewest laughs as the noramal, down to earth guy.
Its not high brow cinema by any means, but at 85 minutes, its short enough not to get on your nerves and long enough to deliver a few laughs until there is something better on. Heder is better in School for Scoundrels and Napoleon Dynamite. Jon Lovtiz' character adds some amusing moments to the film and its nice to see him on screen again after an absence of roles lately.
