Live the war through their words.
is an authentic account of the Vietnam War from the actual letters of the men and women who served there. The harsh realities of life and death, friendships made and lost - these letters home tell it all, with the newsreel and home-movie footage shot by the servicemen themselves. These are the authentic voices of war, some who survived, many others who never made it home. Dear America is a living, breathing tribute to them all.

This is quite possibly one of the most incredible documenteries I have ever seen! It is heartbreaking to hear the letters of the young men who were fighting the war, and to realize that some of them would be their last.
If you are looking for a documentery that not only teaches you something, but makes you feel something quite profound as well this is one you cannot miss. This isn't Platoon! - Cricri7
I have seen many sanitized movies on the Vietnam war, but this is not what you will get here. This is a documentary that takes real letters that soldiers wrote to their families. There is no re-enactment here. You only get real footage from the war with voice-overs narrating the letters. The only thing that bothered me, as it does in movies from that era, is the 60's music that is supposed to put emotions on what you are feeling. I would have done away with the same old songs that we heard in Forrest Gump.Awesome Documentary - Atomic
I loved this film. It was fascinating hearing the letters read by these great actors. Over time, you get a sense of the dispair these "kids" were facing in a brutal war. Initially, they were proud and saw the end of the tunnel. By the end, all they wanted to do was finish their tour and get home, no matter what. And even then when they got home, they were illtreated by their countrymen. Once again, it all comes out in their own words.
Loved it.
