Movies about the bond between father and son tend to be over the top, hard to relate to. I don't know about you, but I rarely, if ever, had a "deep and meaningful" with my dad and it wasn't usually while we were tossing the pigskin in the backyard. This film, in actuality a trio of short films about that aforementioned connection, gets the awkwardness that exists between the male of our species and their male offspring satisfyingly right. The first film is the stand out by far. It captures the closeness that exists in childhood and the uncomfortability that comes with adulthood, perfectly. Bradley Whitford is superb as the dad who goes from concerned, to frustrated to irrelevant as his son grows before his eyes. The second film features a towering performance from John Mahoney as a middle aged man who mistreats his wife (Kathy Baker) and sidesteps his son (Ron Eldard). This is the film of the bunch that gets a little melodramatic, but Mahoney's authority and Eldard's sadness keep it somewhat grounded. The final film has Gale Harold coming home to say goodbye to his dying father (Joseph Bologna). I really liked the anger that perforated every shot of this film, but the final scene was like it was out of a completely different story, created as though we needed a reason to like these characters despite their disillusionment. Not only that, but it tied all three stories together in a way that was cliched, something these messy little films appeared to be fighting against.fragmented lives cut short - kreeTeek
It is very difficult to portray any relationship within minutes, so the fact this aspires to give us a slice of life of three father-son relationships dooms its with almost cookie cutter characters, where developement was lacking depth. As a result, this movie moved like a doomed daytime drama. This could have been a very good film if it had focesed on one relationship rather than three brief ones. Symbolically, the last scene involves a Jewish baby's ceremonial circumcision!
