Lantern Hill
Twelve-year-old Jane has grown up thinking that her father (Sam Waterston) has passed away, until he suddenly writes one day, requesting custody of his daughter. Despite the protests of a meddling grandmother (Zoe Caldwell), Jane is sent to live with her father at Lantern Hill, the farm where she was born. Prepared for the worst, Jane discovers her father to be a kind and caring man whose undying love for her mother has been shrouded all these years by the mysterious circumstances of their separation. Through the encouragement of a mystical woman named Hepzibah (Colleen Dewhurst), Jane secretly resolves to reunite her parents by overcoming the obstacles that stand in her way, while discovering the courage and inner strength she never knew existed.

If you loved the Road to Avonlea series.... - anwallette
then you will enjoy this movie. While it does vary greatly from the book, the main points are there.
Colleen Dewhurst and Sarah Stanley do amazing jobs as supporting actors to the young Mairon Bennett. Mairon brings a very awkward innocence to the role of Jane (which is exactly what was needed).
Through the course of the movie, Jane goes from being a bullied wallflower into a young lady full of courage and grace. She comes into her own through keeping house on PEI and having adventures away from her grandmother.reliving the past - pe2nia
I vaguely remember watching this when it was on TV back in the 1980's. Sarah Polley is a secondary character and she played this role about the same time Road to Avonlea started. Its great to watch again if you are a true diehard fan of Road to Avonlea or Sarah Polley's early work. Cute, mysterious and a great story! Truly Canadian
