It's rather cute...and easy to watch - C2007
Starring screen legend Sam Neill (Dead Calm, A Cry in the Dark) in the title role and one of Britain's most accomplished thespians, Miranda Richardson (Damage) as The Lady of the Lake, the miniseries opens with the great wizard returning to Camelot, only to find the entire mythical community in ruins from the theft of its most revered Holy Grail.Sequel only in name - XTRUClerk
I sat through Merlin's apprentice, but it wasn't easy. The effects are poor, the cast is not very good (even the supposed princess is rather plain looking and would be laughed at if she ran for homecomming queen), the story is painfully slow to unfold. All of these things alone would have been reason enough to dislike the two part miniseries, what makes it truly loathsome is how good the original was and how little of that series' magic has made it to this one. All of the charm, wit and inventiveness of the original are missing from this messy peice of TV. Sam Neil is the only thing that survives from the original (he and the lady of the lake that is), but even their performances are poor. Merlin has slept for 50 years, Camelor is dying we are told, and the Grail has vanished. The next three hours are basically spent by the main characters arguing who is to blame (pure and inpure) and how to get the grail back. I've seen more intertaining theater put on by grade schoolers. If you were a fan of the original series, which I still am, you'll want to see this one. Take my advice, stay away! A total waste of time. Cheers.
